Squirrels are prolific climbers that live naturally in trees. These rodents have no trouble going from place to place, jumping and climbing onto our roofs and getting inside our attics. Keeping these animals out is important though because they are horribly destructive indoors. They’ll tear up the insulation in your walls and make a horrible smell. If you suspect a squirrel infestation in your home, call Squirrel Control Toronto.
Despite their small frame, squirrels are incredibly agile creatures that can jump up to 5 feet straight up off the ground and soar 9 feet horizontally. They can even run 30km per hour! This agility permits them to live in the tops of trees, but it has certainly helped them adapt to urban human living. Squirrels have no trouble climbing the outer walls of our homes and chewing their way inside our attics. As rodents, squirrels can chew through practically any material – even metal! Squirrels commonly invade people’s homes in search of a warm place to nest and raise their young.
Squirrels can unfortunately climb up and down gutters. They can also climb up walls and jump from nearby trees to reach your house. Given that you need gutters to keep your roof dry, you should not remove them, but there are other things you can do to squirrel-proof your house. Start by removing squirrel foods from the yard, then make your attic impenetrable. Mow the lawn and tidy up the yard on a regular basis. Switch to squirrel-proof bird feeders and pick up any fruit you find on the grown. You can also use lidded garbage cans and try shielding your vegetable garden with row covers.
To protect your attic from squirrels, have a good look at your roof and repair any damage you find. Squirrels often chew through weak spots on the roof to get into the attic. Check your soffits for damage or loosened panels and examine your roof’s edge closely for any gaps between the drip edge and the framing of the house. Drip edges sometimes become warped with time. After you’ve made all the repairs you need, you can strengthen weak spots by screwing in a 16-gauge, galvanized steel mesh. Cap your roof vents, pipes, and chimneys with mesh as well.
There’s not much you can do about your gutters, but you can squirrel-proof the rest of the house to help prevent an invasion. Squirrel Control offers quality squirrel-proofing to keep the pests out. We’ll check every nook and cranny of your roof and block every weak point accordingly. If you’re currently dealing with an infestation, we can take care of that, too.
