Coffee is the most popular beverage in the world, but squirrels hate it! Squirrels love to rummage through gardens and garbage cans, but they will steer clear of any coffee smell. If you’re interested in protecting your plants from squirrels, you can absolutely try peppering them with coffee grounds. Just keep in mind that coffee grounds alone may not be enough to keep the squirrels away. For quality squirrel control, call Squirrel Control.
Squirrels are rodents with a mostly herbivorous diet consisting of seeds, nuts, buds, and berries. Unlike their nocturnal rodent cousins, like the mouse and rat, squirrels are up during the day and sleep at night. They are also very active during the wintertime, constantly foraging for food. Female squirrels often invade people’s homes in search of a place to nest and raise their young. Soffits and attics are common nesting locations. Signs of a squirrel infestation include an increased amount of squirrel activity on your property and the sounds of squealing, thumping, and chattering coming from the walls or roof of the house.
Coffee grounds will keep squirrels away from your garden because they do not like the smell. Simply sprinkle some fresh grounds on the soil surrounding your plants every two weeks. You can also try spraying your plants with a hot pepper spray for the same effect. You can make your own spray by mixing together a small bottle of hot pepper sauce with a teaspoon of dish soap and 3 or 4 liters of water. Sprays that mimic the smell of predator urine are another option available in stores. Note that coffee grounds and sprays are effective at repelling squirrels from your garden, but they won’t guard your home from an invasion.
The best way to deter squirrels is to make your home impenetrable and unattractive to them. Check your roof for any damage, such as a warped drip edge or cracked soffit, and make every repair you can. Then, block your roof vents and chimneys with a strong steel mesh. You can also strengthen weak spots, like the rubber surrounding a pipe, with mesh. Switch to squirrel-proof bird feeders if you enjoy bird watching and pick up any fallen fruit you find in the yard. You can also try covering your vegetable garden with row covers or chicken wire.
